Environmental risk assessment of ocean-based CO₂ removal (Direct Ocean Capture). The project examines potential environmental impacts of a pilot-scale technology developed by FlowMinerals that captures CO₂ from seawater through an electrochemical process where carbon dioxide is mineralised into calcium carbonate. The technology operates without chemicals and is powered by electricity.

Relevance to DHI

The project supports DHI’s work on environmental assessment of emerging marine technologies and contributes knowledge on potential impacts of ocean-based carbon dioxide removal in the marine environment.

What is the student's contribution

The student will review relevant research on marine carbon dioxide removal, identify key environmental parameters to monitor and propose a simple monitoring and sampling programme for pilot operation. The project may also include developing a risk matrix describing potential environmental impacts and outlining an environmental reporting structure for authorities and project partners.
